Macrobiotics - healthy eating - healthy living
Macrobiotic directions for a natural food diet are:
- No industrialised food and drink such as sugar,
soft drinks, dyed food, canned or bottled food
- Wholegrains and vegetables as the core of
the diet with animal products eaten in smaller
amounts or not at all. When Ohsawa wrote
there was no organic meat industry so he
proposed occasional game and fish
- Food should be produced without chemical
fertilisers and pesticides, i.e organic food
- Avoid food that comes from a long distance
- Choose foods in season - eating in season
harmonises with the bodyԳ natural seasonal
changes. (It also ensure freshness and avoids
preservatives.)
- Avoid nightshades: aubergine, potato, tomato
- they contain toxic solanine alkaloids
- No chemical seasonings (i.e. msg), colouring or
preservatives
- No coffee, although tea is allowed
- Yeasted foods kept to a minimum - natural
leaven preferred
- Chew every mouthful 50 times or more.
- Low liquid intake - Ohsawa argued that
kidney function did not need large amounts
of water.
